Chemical Peels: Types, Benefits & What They Can Treat

Chemical peels are one of the most established cosmetic treatments in dermatology, and for good reason — they're versatile, effective for a wide range of concerns, and can be tailored in intensity to match your skin's needs and your recovery preferences.

How Chemical Peels Work

During a chemical peel, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, causing the top layers to peel away over the following days. This reveals fresher, smoother skin underneath and stimulates collagen production, which can improve skin elasticity and firmness over time.

Types of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are generally grouped into three categories based on depth:

  • Superficial peels — use mild acids, such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), to exfoliate the outermost layer of skin. These are effective for fine lines, mild discoloration, and general texture improvement, with little to no downtime. Our Glytone Peel, which uses glycolic acid, is one example of a superficial peel option.
  • Medium peels — penetrate deeper using trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and are effective for moderate sun damage, wrinkles, and uneven pigmentation.
  • Deep peels — the most intensive option, typically using phenol, for significant improvement in deep wrinkles, scars, and severe sun damage. Because of the deeper penetration, deep peels require a longer recovery period, with temporary swelling, crusting, and discomfort.

What Can Chemical Peels Treat?

Depending on the depth and type of peel, chemical peels can help improve:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Overall skin texture and tone

Choosing the Right Peel for You

The right peel depends on your skin type, the concerns you're looking to address, and how much downtime you're comfortable with. A superficial peel might be a good fit if you're looking for a quick refresh with minimal recovery, while medium or deep peels are better suited for more noticeable sun damage, wrinkles, or scarring. It's important to consult with a qualified dermatology provider before undergoing any peel, especially medium or deep options, to determine the right depth and type for your skin.
